Invasive Species Series was created by Rubbish Artist Tracey Graham who is based in Surrey. Rubbish Artist’s work explores the potential of reclaimed materials and found objects, using humour and creativity to inspire sustainable thinking. They believe playfulness is far more effective than fingerpointing when encouraging reflection on our environmental impact. By transforming thrown away materials into precious and poetic sculpture, Rubbish Artist aims to reframe how we perceive waste, inviting viewers to find beauty and value in the discarded and using art as a hopeful catalyst for change.
Inspired by Rubbish Artist’s love of coral reefs and diving, this is a wry look at single-use plastics which take decades to break down into microplastics affecting wildlife and people every step of the way. Each critter has a taxonomy, a made up ‘Latin’ name and a lifespan reflecting the number of years it takes to break down. They are made from the types of plastics that invade our waterways, some beach-combed, some bin-combed. The intention is to provoke thought about consumer choices and elevate plastic to something more valuable than the throw-away single-use culture we currently inhabit. There’s no art on a dead planet.
Tracey Graham’s artwork will be displayed in the Window Gallery at Unit 79/80, County Mall Shopping Centre from Friday 3 April, Opening times here
This work is by photographer, filmmaker and artist, Simon Edwards who is based in Crawley, West Sussex. The magic of photography was sparked in childhood when sat looking at his Dad’s Kodachrome slides using a handheld backlit viewer; photography has held his imagination ever since.
This work is a snapshot of Simon’s work and is the first time that he has shown his work in this way and on this scale. It contains elements of the everyday and is a response to the world through a viewfinder. It is a celebration of what is, an exploration of the mundane and that becomes extraordinary through the gaze of the artist.
