Following the return of the building to Crawley Borough Council, Creative Crawley was determined to continue supporting the artists who once worked in the now-closed West Green Studios. So we have transformed an area of its creative space at Unit 79/80, County Mall to facilitate vibrant new studios, now home to three artists in residence: textile artist Beth Williams, visual artist Sarah Maple, and architect and sculptor Karl Singporewala.
These new studios have been developed in thoughtful collaboration with the artists themselves. Creative Crawley has built this new addition to the space with both the individual artists and the town as a whole in mind; we hope to further enrich the cultural ecology of Crawley by providing these bespoke facilities in an accessible and familiar place.
Artist in residence Sarah Maple shared her excitement about the move:
“I have always wanted a studio in Crawley and it’s been almost impossible to find a suitable space. I am about to work on a photography series for Creative Crawley and a large painting commission for a museum, so it is perfect timing to have the space in County Mall. I’m so excited for this new chapter and to share with Beth and Karl! It’s so lovely to have a creative community in Crawley and I can’t wait to see what more connections come from this.”
Textile artist Beth Williams highlighted the value of working alongside other creatives:
“Having a studio space in the centre of Crawley is something I never could have imagined a few years ago. As lucky as I am to be able to work from home, nothing beats being around other artists. Whether it’s just having a chat, collaborating or bouncing ideas off each other. It’s also an amazing space to bring clients into, they immediately pick up on the energy of the space and get to experience a little of what creatives in Crawley have to offer; not to mention the practicalities of the transport links to London and Brighton.”
