This October, the vibrant sounds and rhythms of Parai drumming are coming to Crawley.
Ahead of the workshops on Sunday 25th October, we caught up with Karthik Kamalakannan, Founder and Instructor at TamilArts UK, to learn more about this traditional Tamil instrument, its cultural significance and what participants can look forward to.
Parai is a traditional Tamil percussion instrument with a rich cultural history, particularly in South India and Sri Lanka. It’s a frame drum traditionally played using two sticks, known for its powerful rhythms that have been part of celebrations, ceremonies and community life for generations.
But Parai is more than simply a drum. It’s a form of cultural expression, storytelling and connection, with a deep significance in Tamil heritage and identity. Today, Parai continues to be celebrated as a powerful expression of Tamil culture, connecting generations through music, movement and shared heritage.
Sharing Parai is about introducing people to Tamil culture while celebrating something universal: the joy of making music together.
I hope everyone who joins us will experience the excitement and enjoyment of group drumming while discovering more about the history and cultural significance of Parai.
The workshops are also a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, develop your musical skills and enjoy a shared creative experience in a friendly, welcoming community setting.
You don’t need any previous musical experience to take part, making the workshops ideal for beginners. Everyone leaves with new skills, greater confidence and a deeper appreciation of Tamil heritage.
These hands-on workshops are all about getting involved! We’ll introduce you to the rhythms of Parai, explore the traditions behind the instrument and, most importantly, give you the opportunity to have a go yourself. Drums will be provided for all participants.
Whether you’re a musician, enjoy percussion or simply want to try something completely new, we’d love you to join us.
There are two sessions available:
We’ll be at Ifield Drive Community Centre, Ifield Drive, Crawley, West Sussex, RH11 0HD.
We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone and sharing the energy and joy of Parai drumming with the Crawley community!
The workshops are presented by Aruvi, in collaboration with Creative Crawley and Tamil Learning Centre Crawley.
