Making The Invisible Visible: A Self-Led Walk

Making The Invisible Visible

By Eric MacLennan and the Collective Effort

In February and March 2025, 4 local community groups participated in workshops with Eric MacLennan and Megan Trotman (Workshop Assistant) at various locations across Crawley.

During their time together, they shared stories about objects that had significant meaning to them; the objects you’d grab in the event of a fire or the objects that remind you of a different time or the objects that were gifted to you by a loved one. Collecting their stories and objects, Eric has created an exhibition called Making The Invisible Visible which will feature some of the stories (both written and recorded) and objects loaned by the participants.

A yellow lined piece of paper with the words in capital letters: HI MEGAN HAVE A NICE BREAKFAST FROM CLEM!!!
A letter written by a participants’ brother. One of the objects to feature in the exhibition.

“I enjoyed the workshop because it was bringing back memories that I thought were forgotten.” – Participant at Carey House, West Green.

The project began in May 2024 when Eric was in residence at Crawley Library and Broadfield Library with his project Invisible (L)ink which uses the concept of town twinning but applies it to objects. Over the course of 4 weeks, 102 people visited Eric to share their stories and twin an object in Crawley with a friend in another place across the world. Crawley has now been twinned with 102 different places including Brisbane in Australia, Kampala in Uganda and New York in USA.

You can now go on a self-led walk to around Crawley Town Centre or Broadfield to discover these objects and stories. Get your listening device and headphones, experience the town in a new way.
