Karl Singporewala: Cosmos, Memory, Scale
SOAS Gallery, University of London, 9 October – 13 December 2025
Karl Singporewala, resident artist at the artist and maker space developed as part of The Creative Village project by Creative Crawley and Theatre Centre; West Green Studios, has launched an exhibition of his work at the University of London’s SOAS Gallery this month.
Karl spoke of the impact Creative Crawley’s West Green Studios has had on his work and the part it has played in the creation of this exhibition:
“The creation of West Green Studios in Crawley is an absolute game changer. What Theatre Centre and Creative Crawley have achieved in offering artist studios in our town is nothing short of ‘enlightened’. I would not have been able to produce the work for this major exhibition in my hometown without these facilities, studio spaces and community of other artist residents – who have supported, critiqued, and assisted me in assembling over thirty-five sculptures, maquettes and art works. It is no exaggeration to emphasise that the offering at West Green Studios has been transformative to my career, my practice, and trajectory in life.”
Featuring an array of visually striking mixed-media works and installations by Singporewala from the past 15 years, the exhibition represents a vibrant dialogue between contemporary artistic practice, architectural monuments/follies and Zoroastrian heritage, investigating themes of identity, memory and historical continuity. The exhibition even features a large 2.5m high mathematical star structure, which is the final version of a new sculpture Singporewala first prototyped at a West Green Studios open day with pupils from Gatwick School.
Singporewala’s artwork is conveyed through architecture and sculptural forms. By weaving intricate layers of personal, communal and cultural memory, Karl invites viewers to reflect deeply on the ways we perceive and measure our place in the universe. The exhibition also features loaned objects from private collectors and leading cultural institutions, including the British Museum, adding depth and historical context to the artist’s contemporary interpretations.
Karl has shared how he would love for some of the pieces to remain in Crawley. You can view the catalogue and purchase editions of artwork here: www.CosmosMemoryScale.co.uk.
