This exhibition will open as part of the Crawley Fusion Mela, a weekend of live entertainment and community celebration. It will then be on display in the Long Gallery at Unit 79/80 County Mall during opening times.
Crawley Fusion Mela – Full Saturday Line-Up
| Between Two Worlds is a new body of work that explores what it feels like to grow up and live as a mixed-heritage person in the UK. Sarah’s new work brings British and South Asian imagery together alongside witty text and carefully curated symbolic objects. As well as a personal reflection, she interrogates the historical context of today’s multicultural Britain.
Being of mixed heritage can be a rich and positive experience, but it can also be complicated. Many people navigate different cultures at once, sometimes feeling pulled in different directions. At a time when the subject of identity is becoming more prominent, this work connects personal experiences with wider conversations about identity and belonging As the number of mixed-heritage people in Britain continues to grow, this series aims to tell stories that are not always widely seen or understood. Sarah invites a broad audience to reflect on what it means to belong in contemporary Britain. |
Sarah Maple is a resident artist at Unit 79/80 and a local resident. Read about Creative Crawley’s artists’ studios read about Creative Crawley’s artists’ studios here.
